Blogging Friends

blogging-friendsBack in 2006 when I first started blogging on AOL, I literally fell into a wonderful blogging community, and quickly gained new friends from all over the world, the difference was that we write journals, and basically charted our lives, hopes, dreams through this medium.

As you all know in the blogging fraternity you tend to have your favourites, and it just like a real friendship even though you might never meet.

There was one such very sweet lady from North Carolina, who sadly died suddenly on the 1st of July.

I love the way she wrote about the human condition, her words always inspired, she wrote so eloquently about her life, her challenges with mental illness, suicide, politics, her family, friends her love of poetry, music, so many things to her interest.

Her intelligence and compassion for those who suffered injustices across the globe as well as in her own backyard, she had a lively sense of humour to which was always intact, she had one of those rare gifts of being to reach out even when all seemed lost. Most of all she made me think!.

She was one of my first eve commenters and a couple of times when I was going to throw in the towel she encouraged me to keep writing to find the inspiration to write those word about things that mattered to me, she also encouraged me to be afraid of criticism, as long as your honest and it comes from the heart you’ll be fine she counselled, she was right.

There are not many people you can connect with in your day-to-day life, so to find that connection online is a pretty wonderful thing, I think that sometimes without eye contact, tone of voice, gestures we listen more when it is written, therefore actually feel what is being said, and when we comment it comes from a wholly different perspective, as you have been made to think about what is said and be able to more clearly respond and even better learn.

This is why I love blogging, it’s not about having thousands of followers, or likes or even comments, but the quality of those who wish to engage with you on your journey whatever the topic, and if in some small way you can help each other so much the better, sometimes we can’t reach out to those around us, but for me personally when bloggers understand my journey and take the time to comments and invest in me as it were it makes my journey more worthwhile.

Why do you blog?

I started my first ever blog here in at the end of May, simply as a tool to help me express my moods and emotions. The idea was to recognise triggers and help myself with my Bipolar – I didn’t think for one moment anyone would want to read my scribbles. However, two months later and I’m close to 900 followers…I’ve met some amazing, supportive people and have made some good friends. WordPress really has changed my life.

I blog to share my invisible illness advocacy from which I too suffer and to help others. I also have another blog that is stories and poems back before I decided to bring my life out into the open in an effort to help others.

    • Sharing our journey to wellness, gives invaluable support to others who are struggling alone, it takes great courage to open up the darkest parts of your life, but in the end I think it’s worth it.:)

  3. I initially started to blog to help express my thoughts and feelings around my anxiety and depression. I never thought I would be so involved in the blogging world. It’s a real community. I am so glad I started my blog. It’s helped me so much x

I didn’t come into blogging to gain followers. I’ve actually only written 175 posts in over 2 years. the most important thing to me, and it sounds like you are the same, is the sense of community with people who comment. Sometimes I wonder if we actually get to know each other better than people we know in person. I know most people put loads of time and commitment into publishing consistently, but I am not sure if it would ruin our experience. We both seem to approach it when it feels right and we have something to say. Anyway, I am glad you didn’t throw the towel in, Cay, we would never have met and I always enjoy reading your blog

    • The community spirit is what keeps me going, and I’ve met some amazing people through my blogging experiences.

I know many talk about content, but for me it’s more than that the bravery shown here on a daily basis, gives me faith in people and to know there are so many that walk a similar path makes me believe in myself a little more.

I’ve been in other communities where we would meet up a couple times of year, what a blast, and best of all you still learn something new.

The numbers aren’t important, the people are, and of course I wouldn’t have met you either 🙂 xx
      Thank you for being you.

  7. I started blogging, to get out my pet peeves, but it turned out to be so much more. I started writing poetry, which I had no idea I even had inside me. I quickly advanced to writing about the childhood sexual abuse. It was sometimes difficult to write, knowing that others were reading what I was writing, perhaps people I actually know, and relatives. I do know that any post that is put on Facebook, is available for a lot of my family and church family to read. At first that scared me, but now, I write because it is very good therapy for me. I’ve made a lot of new blogging friends, and the number of followers I have reached, is totally astounding.
